Spring Harvest - The Big Lounge

(This has been on the VRUK blog for a little while - but has now finally made it to the GBG blog where it rightly also deserves a place.)

I got back from Spring Harvest in Minehead yesterday. We had a great week in the All Age Worship celebration, playing messy games, dancing to funky songs and learning how to be an apprentice of Jesus. (The theme in all of this years SH venues.)

Nigel Hemming headed up the team along with Amy, Amy, Dave (Hull Vineyard) Kat, Zara, (Network Vineyard Birmingham) James (Bristol Vineyard) and another Dave (Causeway Coast Vineyard) with invaluable help from the other Hemmings - Jo, Becky Zac and JJ.

We used a bunch of songs from the new Great Big God Live DVD that went down a storm, had a few technical difficulties with some phone in games; (and what I think we would all put as our highlight) had some amazing opportunities for ministry to pray with the families who came and for the children & parents to pray with each other. As Dave said one night there is no junior Jesus or mini Holy Spirit, we all get to play no matter how young or old.

A brilliant week - if you were with us - thanks. :-D

The DVD looks and sounds amazing - and last Saturday we met up with Nigel Hemming and all the dancers and choir from the DVD for a premier screening at the Electric Cinema in Birmingham. It look superb on the big screen as well as home TVs and DVD players!

Well, we have filmed and recorded the Live event and had a great time! It was immense fun and everyone was brilliant - from the band to the dancers, choir, the ladies who made the sandwiches and all you who turned up to be in the crowd - you were all simply great!

So the countdown on my google desktop tells me we’re 12 days away from our DVD shoot at this stage… Having never ever organised a film shoot before it’s been a steep learning curve for all of us but we have a great team working on making it happen and there’s plenty of enthusiasm in the camp. Going through the team lists yesterday I realised that there were around 50 adults involved in some way or other during the production week as well as the 25 kids singing & dancing on the stage and the other 100 or so who will come and be in the audience. It feels like an awesome & humbling privilege that all these people are coming just because I had a crazy idea one day.

After 2 days of intense band rehearsals at the end of September we got straight into working with the various kids who are going to sing and dance on stage which was a lot of fun. We actually took some good footage which we were hoping to upload a bit sooner but we got stuck with some legal questions about whether we could show the kids on the web (I think we can so watch this space). Everyone’s been practising their words and moves, the script is almost finalised, the backdrop is being printed, the food order’s gone for the week, the t shirt colours are firmed up and I can only count 16 things left on my to do list.

I’ll be so glad when the production week finally gets underway and I can dial down on the admin front and dial up on the creative side. There is a lot of energy and passion from everyone on the team & I’m so excited about being able to capture some of that on film.

There are still a few places left in the audience so if you know kids who would be up for it, do encourage them to book in.

When the idea for the song ‘Our God is a Great Big God’ first popped into my head a few months before the end of the last millennium, I had little idea that just short of 10 years later we’d be releasing a live DVD! As I write, we have seven weeks until the filming and a not insignificant amount of planning still to do. It’s true we have the band booked, we’ve hired the cameras, we’ve auditioned some children to sing and dance on stage and we’ve chosen the songs, but we still have to finalise designs, get an audience, finish logos, think about arrangements, start rehearsals, recruit security and find someone to apply the makeup!!!

I’ve been thinking about producing a live DVD ever since our last Great Big God event back in 2006. Having enjoyed a number of years of recording albums and then taking the songs out live events across the UK & beyond, we really wanted to capture the atmosphere of a Great Big God event on film. As you can imagine it’s taken quite a long time to get together the vision, the budget & the right people to be involved but after a few serious bouts of nerves, I’m now starting to think we can actually produce something worthwhile. Our hope is that as well as being enjoyed by kids & families in their homes, the DVD will be a great resource for children’s leaders to use in kids church, clubs & schools. There will be extra bits on where you can learn the dance moves or make a drum in order to join in with the party.

I seem to have spent much of the last few months calling, texting and emailing people to persuade them to get involved, and I’m pleased to say we’ve got a fantastic diverse team together to work on what will be a new venture for most of us. We’ve auditioned some enthusiastic and talented kids to sing and dance and rehearsals start in earnest in a couple of weeks.

We’ll be keeping you up to date with the production via this blog and including video clips as well to whet your appetite. In the meantime, with only a few weeks left, I should probably get back to the planning…
